Nownesia Privacy Policy

Introduction & Scope: Nownesia is a global news platform serving readers around the world. We respect your privacy and comply with international data protection laws (e.g. EU GDPR, US CCPA/CPRA, China’s PIPL, South Africa’s POPIA, Brazil’s LGPD, etc.). This Policy explains how we collect, use, and share your personal data when you use our services. It applies worldwide, with particular attention to regions such as Asia, the European Union, and the Americasusercentrics.com. Wherever you are located, this Policy describes your rights and how we meet legal requirements (for example, by providing a Data Protection Officer contact).

Data We Collect: We collect personal information that you provide directly (such as your name, email, address, phone number, account login, or payment details) and technical data automatically (such as IP address, device/browser type, and location data). We also use passive tracking technologies like cookies and web beacons. Cookies and similar identifiers can amount to personal data under privacy laws. Generally, our categories of data include:

  • Identity and contact data: name, email, postal address, phone number, username and password.
  • Usage and log data: pages viewed, time spent on pages, referring/exit pages, search terms, clicks and scrolling.
  • Device and location data: device identifiers, browser type, screen resolution, operating system, mobile network information, and approximate geolocation.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: We use strictly necessary cookies for site functionality (no consent needed) and seek opt-in consent for analytics, performance, and advertising cookiesgdpr.eu. We only track data passively through these technologies (for example, by analytics scripts or ad networks) – we do not actively scrape additional sensitive information. You can manage or opt out of non-essential cookies via our cookie banner and your browser settings.

How We Use Data: We use your data for clear, legitimate purposes and rely on lawful bases required by applicable laws, For example:

  • Service delivery and contract: We process data (legal basis = contract necessity) to provide news content, handle subscriptions or purchases, and communicate with you about your account.
  • Consent-based uses: With your permission, we may send newsletters or personalized marketing, or analyze your preferences. We obtain opt-in consent where required (e.g. email marketing, non-essential cookies) and allow you to withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interests: We may process data to operate and improve our website and services (such as performing analytics, preventing fraud, ensuring security, and customizing content) based on our legitimate business interests. For instance, monitoring site usage and performance helps us improve user experience. We balance these interests against your rights and never override fundamental privacy protections.
  • Legal obligations: We process data to comply with legal duties (e.g. tax, accounting, or court orders). When laws require, we keep certain records or provide your data to authorities.

These uses and legal bases ensure we only handle data fairly and transparently.

International Data Transfers: Nownesia operates worldwide, so your data may be stored or processed on servers in different countries. For transfers from the EU or other regions with strict data laws, we use EU-approved mechanisms. Specifically, we rely on the European Commission’s adequacy decisions or implement Standard Contractual Clauses and similar safeguards, ensuring the data protection level remains equivalent to EU standardsedpb.europa.eu. For example, transfers to countries like Japan, Canada, or the UK are covered by adequacy findings.

Some countries require local storage of personal data. We comply with these rules by storing and processing data within that country’s borders if needed. For instance, under China’s PIPL we note any localization obligations and, if handling Chinese residents’ data, we keep it on servers in Chinausercentrics.com. Likewise, under Russia’s 152-FZ law we store Russian citizens’ personal data on Russian servers. In all cases, we only transfer data internationally when the destination offers legally adequate protection or we have a lawful basis (like your consent) to do so, and we use encryption and contracts to safeguard your information.

User Rights: We honor the rights granted by your local laws regarding your personal data. Generally, these include:

  • Access and information: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you and ask for details about how we process it. Data protection laws like the GDPR call this “right of access”gdpr.eu.
  • Correction and deletion: If your data is inaccurate or outdated, you can ask us to correct it. You can also request deletion of your data (“right to erasure” or “right to be forgotten”) when it’s no longer needed for our purposesgdpr.eu. We’ll also delete data if you revoke consent and no other legal basis applies.
  • Data portability: Under laws like the GDPR and Brazil’s LGPD, you can request your data in a portable format and transfer it to another service. We will provide your data if legally possible.
  • Objection and restriction: You have the right to object to certain processing (e.g. direct marketing or analysis based on legitimate interest) and to ask us to limit processing if it is inaccurate or unlawfully processedgdpr.eu.
  • Opt-out of sales or sharing: California law (CCPA/CPRA) gives Californians the right to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for advertising purposes. Nownesia does not knowingly sell personal information, but we do provide an easy “Do Not Sell or Share” link as required. You can also opt out of targeted advertising (for example, via industry opt-out pages or privacy settings).
  • Other rights: Depending on your region, additional rights may apply. For instance, in Europe you can withdraw consent or complain to a Data Protection Authority, and similar rights exist under Asia-Pacific laws like Singapore’s PDPA or Japan’s APPI. In South Africa under POPIA you have rights of access, correction, and deletionusercentrics.com. We will facilitate your requests in line with applicable law.

To exercise any rights or make data requests, please contact our Data Protection Officer (see below). We will respond promptly and inform you of action taken, within timeframes required by law (e.g. one month under GDPR).

Children’s Privacy: Our services are not aimed at young children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 without parental consent. In the U.S., the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) governs privacy for children under 13; we comply with COPPA by obtaining verifiable parental consent before collecting any information from that age groupftc.gov. In the EU, the default age to consent is 16 (some countries set it lower), so we likewise require parental permission for younger teens. If we learn a child under the applicable age threshold has provided personal data without such consent, we will delete it. Parents/guardians can contact us to review or remove a child’s information.

Cookies & Tracking Technologies: We use cookies, web beacons, and similar tools to improve our site and services. These include: strictly necessary cookies (for security, logins, shopping carts, etc.), preference cookies (e.g. language settings), analytics cookies (to understand site usage), and marketing cookies (to deliver relevant ads). In accordance with EU rules, we obtain your consent before using any cookies other than strictly necessary ones. Our cookie banner and settings let you accept or decline various categories of cookies. We document consents and allow you to withdraw consent (opt-out) at any time.

Third-Party Services & Affiliates: We may share your personal data with service providers and business partners who help us operate the website or deliver services. This includes hosting providers, cloud platforms, email/marketing services, payment processors, analytics vendors (e.g. Google Analytics), and advertising partners. We carefully vet these third parties and require them to protect your data. We only share data that’s necessary for them to perform their function. We do not sell data to unaffiliated advertisers. Some partners (like social media sites, advertising networks, or embedded content providers) may collect information about your activity on our site according to their own privacy policies. We disclose in this Policy the main categories of third-party sharing (for example, advertising networks, analytics providers, and payment processors)

Data Retention & Security: We retain your personal data no longer than necessary for the purposes stated above or as required by law. For example, we may keep account and transactional data for a few years for tax or compliance reasons. We follow the principle of data minimization and “storage limitation” – retaining only what is neededgdpr.eu. When data is no longer needed (or upon your deletion request), we securely delete or anonymize it.

We use robust technical and organizational security measures to protect your data from unauthorized access, disclosure, or loss. This includes encryption of data in transit (SSL/TLS) and at rest, firewalls, secure servers, intrusion detection, and access controls. We regularly test and update our security. In line with the GDPR’s integrity and confidentiality principle, we aim to ensure appropriate security (e.g. encryption) of all personal data. In case of a data breach, we will notify affected users and authorities as required by law (for instance, within 72 hours under GDPR, and promptly under other regimes).

Cross-Border Compliance: Because we operate globally, we adapt to regional requirements. Under the GDPR we rely on approved mechanisms (adequacy decisions or Standard Contractual Clauses) for EU data transferse. Many other regions also have adequacy lists (e.g. Argentina, UK, Japan, South Korea, etc.) or local transfer rules, which we follow. Conversely, certain countries mandate data localization. As noted above, China’s laws require Chinese citizens’ personal data to stay in China, and Russia’s law similarly requires Russian citizens’ data to be stored on local servers. We comply with all such localization laws by confining storage and processing to designated countries or data centers when handling that jurisdiction’s data.

Changes to This Policy: We keep our Privacy Policy up to date as laws or our practices change. We will post the revised Policy on our website with an updated “Last Updated” date. For major changes (e.g. new uses of data or new rights), we will provide prominent notice (via email, site banner, or similar) before or after the change, so you can review the updates.
